According to many news sources he is resigning so Charlie Christ can take his place increasing the number of GOP Senetors by one. This is brilliant, and the Democrats dont even realize they are being set up, fact.

Just like Palin resigning, its all part of the plan people, the Democrats are finished, fact.

No but it might help the GOP to keep one.

This move did not increase the number of republicans in office.

No, replacing one Republican with another Republican does not increase the number of Republicans. If a Democrat Senator resigns in a state where a Republican governor has the power to appoint a replacement, then you have reason to celebrate.

By resigning now, Mr. Martinez gives his replacement the advantage of incumbency, which is a tremendous advantage in an election.

The conventional wisdom is that Charlie Crist (not Christ, though his name is often misspelled that way) will appoint himself Senator, allowing him to run as an incumbent.

Politico says "It’s near-certain that Crist will not appoint himself," but then, Martinez had already said he would serve out his term, so take it with a grain of salt.

The GOP is thinking defense on this one, as Florida have been voting bluer lately.
